Business of Fashion

As a reader of Business of Fashion, I am always updated with current issues regarding business in the fashion industry. Being subscribed to BOF and getting email through my phone, gives me chance to to feel connected to the industry while studying, moreover, with the information I read, regarding businesses and fashion labels can be applied to my A-Level work. For instance, in my current textiles project, I can talk about technology and how effective it is in the fashion industry.
Fashion is not all about the clothing and the designs, there is more to that. When I read the daily digest section, it reminds me that fashion revolves around everywhere, even in technology. Recent release of the Apple watch become an influencial trendsetter in September. With this trendsetter, Ralph Lauren introduced a smart shirt and smart Ricky bag, and designers from Tory Burch to Vivienne Tam to Michael Kors got serious about the technological accessories. Fashion has turned to a powerful satement, where nearly all garments, products, gadgets and even furniture has become part of trendsettings for each industry.

Fusion of Traditional and Western

The ever so rapid fashion industry in India has been the hotspot this year. The fashion industry in India has been unstoppable, shining designers have shown all that as growing country with modernisation being a big step, no one can forget the traditions which made India different to all.
One designer who star-strucked all at Lakme Fashion Show was Manish Manholtra. His Winter/Festive 2014 collection was full of metallic and soft pastel colours such as plum, silver, bronze and pink. His collection, named 'Gloss' is an combination of long gowns, lehenga cholis and saris, all embellished with diamond studded sequins and heavy embroidery work. His work of traditional style gaments have been adapted with western influences, for instance the skirt in the lehenga cholis have more volume and more focus on the botton border of the skirt. This extravagant style compliments the body well with a fitted wasit and more of a free flare.

   


Designer Vikram Phadnis chose earthy shades along with traditional hues for his ensemble. The winter 2014 collection included designed lehengas, anarkalis, and free flowing kurtas with matching churidars and palazzo pants. Fabrics ranged from tusser to net and brocade in shades of red, green, cream and yellow.
Not only there is focus on the structure and traditional style, but traditional colours of indian fashion has been consistent in his collection. From cream to royal blue to the bold red, Vikram's collection has been a new hope for the modern clothing with a twist of tradition.
 

Postmodernism

In media, I have gained a wide variety of skills ranging from time management to using industrial soft wares. Media is not only about creating texts, but there is also theory behind everything, hence why media is a big topic to learn. With the theory side of media studies, I am learning about postmodernism. This topic is very intriguing as postmodern is everywhere, it is not only in the media industry but in music, fashion, film and many more industries. Many people have different views on the certain topic, which makes me more interested in learning postmodernism and how it's affected the society as a whole. Currently, I am focsuing on the film indusrty and how movies such as Scream, Blade Runner, The Matrix and recent released movies such as The Lego Movie and Lucy are all postmodern is some way. I will be also looking at the television and the video game industry to see how postmodernism can be evidently everywhere.
